Making sustainable finance truly global – the role of Luxembourg’s financial ecosystem

LuxSE COP27 side event!

Capital markets with their ability to efficiently channel growing pools of savings towards critical parts of the economy are a key enabler to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by providing finance to projects that support climate mitigation, adaptation, and resilience.
Africa is showing some early signs of a thematic bond market with Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, Morocco, Kenya and Tanzania seeing the first issuances including Gender Bonds. But a lot needs to be done to develop the market further and address the much-needed investment gaps.

During this side event, expert speakers will explore the importance of cross-border cooperation, capacity building and technical assistance programmes between Europe and Africa and discuss similarities and differences between the two regions’ financial markets. How can Luxembourg’s financial ecosystem further facilitate the establishment of green bond markets in Africa? What can capital market players do to help close the financing gap when it comes to sustainable development in Africa and beyond?
